Bastille Day—also known as French National Day—commemorates the start of the French Revolution and the storming of the Bastille in Paris on July 14, 1789. In New York, the day presents several fun opportunities to explore and celebrate French culture, both on the commemorative day and throughout the preceding weekend. Here's a list of fun Bastille Day events supported by the French Embassy: 

FIAF Bastille Day Fair

60th Street between Lexington & Fifth Avenues, Manhattan

The Bastille Day Fair is a delightful afternoon of French food, culture, and entertainment. Stop by for a champagne and chocolate tasting at the FIAF Skyroom, French macarons, crêpes, cheese, performances on an outdoor stage, free French classes, and more. Kids will love the dance lessons, marching band, mime acts, and music.

Bastille Day Ball

Join the free outdoor French film festival Films on the Green for a screening of Marcel Carné's Port of Shadows (Quai des Brumes)! The Observer called the film - which stars Jean Gabin, Michèle Morgan, and Michel Simon - "a 1938 masterpiece of poetic realism."

18th Annual Greater New York Citroën & Velosolëx Club Rally & Rendez-Vous

Meet at 9am at Grant´s Tomb (Riverside Drive at 122nd St.) to catch Greater New York Citroën & Velosolëx drivers and riders as they embark on their 18th annual trip around Manhattan in classic Citroën cars and on Velosolëx motorbikes. The vehicles will make pit stops at France-related landmarks around the city (including Washington Square Park and two French restaurants) and will ultimately be parked and on view in front of the FIAF Bastille Day Fair on Fifth Avenue and 60th Street, starting at 1:30pm.

Pétanque Tournament

Join over 70 teams for a tournament of the quirky French sport Pétanque. With music in the background and food and beverage by Bar Tabac, the sandy courts offer an excellent way to greet summer.

Take part in French Restaurant Week from July 3-16 or splurge on New York’s many acclaimed French restaurants, including Perrine, Bar Omar, and Dominique Bistro. Plus, sample the best of French macaroons at one of the many delicious French bakeries. For a night filled with delicious French cheese and wine, stop by Murray's Cheese Shop on July 14.
