Tribute to Xavier Douroux, 1956-2017

It's with great sadness that we honor the death of Xavier Douroux, director and co-founder of Le Consortium in Dijon and Les Presses du Réel and influential figure in contemporary art.

In 1977, he co-founded with Frank Gautherot Le Coin du Miroir Association, which gave birth to the pioneering institution Le Consortium. This alternative space, one of the first art centers in France, was established permanently in 2011 in a building designed by Hostettler and renovated by Shigeru Ban and Jean de Gastines.
Since 1991, the arts space has been a mediator of the Fondation de France Nouveaux Commanditaires, which helps individuals and organizations commission works of art.

In 1992, this groundbreaking art center Le Corsortium founded Les Presses du Réel, a publishing house focused on publications about contemporary artists and openings.

Paying close attention to the needs of artists, Xavier Douroux also founded Anna Sander Films, a film production society, with Charles de Meaux, Pierre Huyghe, Philippe Parreno, and Dominique Gonzales-Foerster in 1998.

Xavier Douroux's passing touches artists around the world and especially in the United States who can attest to his generosity from collaborating with him. A true art genius with a clear and fighting spirit, Xavier Douroux profoundly marked the French art scene with his steadfast commitment, his refusal to conform, and his innovative vision of the relationship between art and society.
