In Memoriam: Pierre Le-Tan

We regret the passing on Tuesday, September 17, 2019 of French illustrator Pierre Le-Tan, whose work has been featured on many New Yorker covers as well as in books, museums, and galleries.

Born in Neuilly-sur-Seine in 1950, Le-Tan lived both in France and New York in his lifetime and collaborated with French and American artists, media, and instituions on both sides of the Atlantic.

At 18, he created his first New Yorker cover. He went on to illustrate A Booklover’s Guide to New York, written by his daughter, Cléo Le-Tan, as well as works by Nobel Prize-winning author Patrick Modiano.

An accomplished artist, Le-Tan had many museum and gallery exhibtiions at such institutions as the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid. His illustrations graced many magazines including Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, the New York Times Magazine, Town & Country and Rolling Stone among others.

Le-Tan's playful and whimsical style will live on in his work, which is appreciated by readers and art lovers in France, the United States, and beyond.
