Great Journeys From Your Couch

Summertime FOMO (fear of missing out) spreads as the travel bug continues to take bites out of the weary and the over-worked. Dignity and comfort aside, we travel to explore and uncover new worlds. These summer reads will have you trotting the globe with wild journeys through time and space—all from the comfort of your couch. A l’aventure !

Flash ou le Grand Voyage, Charles Duchaussois (Le livre de poche, 1974)In this autobiographical novel, Duchaussois takes readers on an adventure through France, Lebanon, Turkey, India, Nepal, Tibet, and Koweit. This venturous tour of the Eastern world is filled with dangerous encounters, odd jobs, and even explorations of drug-induced hallucinations.

Southern Mail, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (Harcourt, 1972)Our passionate author-aviator (best known for his novella The Little Prince) gives an account of a routine mail flight from France to North Africa that turns into an epic journey, illustrating the pioneer days of commercial aviation.

Brazil Red, Jean-Christophe Rufin (W. W. Norton & Company, 2004)This coming-of-age novel tells the story of two orphaned children brought along on a colonizing expedition in Brazil. Just and Colombe, along with the other Europeans, get a taste for culture shock in the unyielding obstacles of nature and cannibalistic tribes.
