A Preview Of French Book Events This Fall!

The Book Department is pleased to present this fall’s upcoming events!

Gender in Translation

The multidisciplinary series dedicated to questioning the notion of gender in the social sciences, philosophy, and artistic fields, which began last December and concludes this fall, is presented by the San Francisco Office of the Cultural Services of the French Embassy. The program examines how gender questions are addressed in France and the U.S. This fall, it will welcome Marie-Hélène/Sam Bourcier and Lola Lafon, both of whom are available for additional lectures at stops throughout the U.S.


Shoot the Book! Los Angeles 2016 / November 3-4 2016Launched during the Cannes Film Festival in 2014, Shoot the Book! is a series of pitching sessions by directors of licensing from French publishing houses who present books chosen for their potential adaptations for film, television, and digital formats, in front of an audience of film professionals. For the new season, 5 books have been selected by the jury members, among a list of 24.


The FrancophonINK series brings Francophone fiction writers from a variety of backgrounds to discuss their work in the U.S. In September, Ananda Devi will be at the Brooklyn Book Festival, in Columbia Maison Française, in Boston (Harvard, B.U.) and in Texas. Antoine Volodine will present Bardo or not Bardo at Litquake in San Francisco and Gisèle Pineau will attend the Miami Book Fair, after lecturing in universities in Vermont and in Portland, Oregon.

Albertine events

During the fall, Albertine Books will organize several events, besides the much-awaited Festival Albertine.

Monday, September 12, 2016: An evening with Cyril Pedrosa Cyril Pedrosa, a rising star of European comics, will present Equinoxes (NBM Publishing) a unique, ground-breaking work of rare intensity and narrative sensibility.

September 2016: Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Christian Bourgois PublishingA panel with writers and seasoned publishing professionals to celebrate édition Bourgois, who built one of the most prestigious catalogs in the landscape of French publishing, including towering American authors.

Monday October 3, 2016: A conversation Christophe BoltanskiThe 2015 Prix Femina Laureate Christophe Boltanski and Violaine Huisman, Director of Humanities at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

Monday October 4, 2016: Freeman’s FamilyEdouard Louis, the author of The End of Eddy Bellegueule and Histoire de la Violence, will discuss the best pieces of writings on the theme of family with John Freeman. 

Monday October 17, 2016: Antoine BelloA conversation with novelist Antoine Bello on his new novel Ada.

Friday October 28, 2016: Lola LafonThe Little Communist Who Never Smiles: A Conversation between novelist Lola Lafon and journalist Alexandra Schwartz.
