French Cartoonists Win Society Of Illustrators Awards

After a successful first annual awards ceremony for comic and cartoon art, the Society of Illustrators have announced the second installment of the two-part event, this time recognizing outstanding work in long form, single image, and comic strip illustration. Among the winners this year are French artists Philippe Squarzoni (for long form) and Maëlle Doliveux, whose comic strip Little Nemo in Between Slumberland was awarded the gold medal. Both entries will be displayed in an exhibition featuring over fifty artists from around the world at the Museum of American Illustration from July 7th to the 25th.

Maëlle Doliveux's gold medal-winning Little Nemo in Between Slumberland follows the somnolent Nemo on a surreal, quick-fire race through both Slumberland and the physical panels of the comic strip itself. For a preview, click the featured image above.

Philippe Squarzoni is a previous recipient of the Prix du Jury du Festival de Lyon (2012) and Prix Léon de Rosen (2012) for his work on the environmentalist graphic novel Saison Brune.
