Literary Translation: A French-american (love) Affair?

Good news! The number of French books exported to the U.S. increased by 4.1% in 2010, according to the professional newspaper Livres Hebdo. This means that it will be easier than usual for Americans to discover works of French literature, a pleasure that would not be possible without the work of an international community of translators.

In a country where so many English-language novels appear in translation, France is particularly attentive to questions of literary translation and the support of the translating community. Institutions such as the Centre National du Livre (CNL)-which commissioned a very informative report by the writer and journalist Pierre Assouline, entitled La Condition du traducteur (The Conditions of the Translator)-focus on ways to encourage relationships between translators and publishers.
