French Book Usa: Week In Review

Week after week, Amazon keeps on stealing the headlines: In response to the adoption of a law by the French Parliament that forbids free shipping on book orders (in addition to setting a 5% discount limit), Amazon has announced its plan to now charge its clients a token sum of one cent (in euros) for deliveries.

In other recent news, French e-book retailer Kobo has released a report linked to the end of the World Cup on the status of ebooks sales in soccer literature in France, showing how sales in football-themed e-books doubled in the first week of matches, but then quickly declined as the tournament progressed. It’s that time of year again: French publishers have announced their rentrée littéraire. With a total of 607 upcoming French and translated titles, it’s going to be hard to choose!

Good news for digital publishing: The Presses Universitaires de France (PUF) and Cairn have joined forces to make 2000 research publications in social sciences available online. This is one step further towards the goal for a vast diffusion of scientific resources.

The press has paid tribute this week to Yann Andréa, the late companion of Maguerite Duras, who passed away on July 10th. He was the author of Cet amour-là (Livre de Poche, 2001)—a deeply moving text on writing, love and death.

Last but not least, if you have some trouble mastering the use of the informal “tu” and the formal “vous"—a notorious challenge for translators as well—then the LA times has a flow chart for you!
