First Hackathon For Digital Graphic Novels

Over 70 authors, developers, and editors from all backgrounds came forward to the first digital graphic novels hackathon organized by the Labo de l’édition (an incubator for innovative digital publishing companies) and Sequencity (a readers’ and purchase platform for digital comic books) in partnership with Livre Hebdo (a weekly news source on the publishing world).

During two days, 6 teams reflected upon new ways for producing graphic design content and its digital diffusion. Today, the commonly missing compatibility between content and support system technology has become the principle obstacle for digital graphic novel development.

At the end of the weekend, the teams presented the results of their work. Amongst the projects, Au-delà, an adventure tale of a ghost wandering around inside the Parisian metro, consists for example of an ever-evolving setting with the possibility for character and plot mobility. Another proposal Prophecy uses “comic tricks” in which graphic novel would allow readers to ruse one another. It would invite people to provide information and certain details on readers and actors involved in the comic book’s story. The long-term goal here being to create and sustain an online community of engaged plot-scheming readers.

This hackathon is a success for the event-planners, who wish to continue to push forward on the creative track for reflecting upon future progressive forums and designs for the comic book industry in the digital era.
