Inaugural Nuit Des Idées In Paris

The Institut Français and Laurent Fabius, French Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, are hosting the inaugural Nuit des Idées—“Night of Ideas”—welcoming not only scientists, academics, and journalists of all types, but also the general public to the Quai d’Orsay on January 27th from 6 p.m. until 2 a.m. This event recognizes the importance of international exchange of ideas and, more specifically, France's interest in a renewed global dialogue.

The night's program includes topics about humanity's future divided into four sectors of expertise: Horizons, discussing international borders and human crossings; Exigences (demands) on political and moral aspirations; Conditions for the habitability (or not) of our planet; and Repères (bearings) for finding meaning in art, science and spirituality. Notable speakers on these topics include Maroccan photographer Yto Barrada, Dutch sociologist Saskia Sassen, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, French Ambassador to climate change negotiations Laurence Tubiana, and Senegalese philosopher Souleymane Bachir Diagne.

Alongside the various debates of the evening, writers will be invited to “Lire l’avenir” by perfoming works and essays which aim to decipher the world to come. Among the readers are: historian Philippe Artières; novelist and Prix Femina winner Gwenaëlle Aubry; philosopher and radio/television host Raphaël Enthoven; translator and bilingual poet Ryoko Sekiguchi.

The Nuit des Idées is free and open to the public, but a reservation is required.
