Marc Boutavant

Marc Boutavant will be touring in the U.S. from November 13th to 24th. Meet him in New York City, Princeton, Washington D.C., at the Miami Book Fair and more!

Marc Boutavant is the award-winning author and illustrator of the bestselling Around the World with Mouk. In the Mouk series of books, now an animated tv series, readers are taken on adventures by a busy little bear (Mouk) and his world of animal friends. The pages brim with colors, characters and action, as readers travel to Canada, the South American Pampas, the vast Sahara, and beyond.

For years, Boutavant has drawn the popular Ariol comic strip in J’aime lire, a French monthly magazine for young readers. Two titles in a series of books based on the strip, Ariol: Just a Donkey Like You and Me, and Ariol: Thunder Horse, are now available in English translation. Like Mouk, Ariol has been adapted into an animated tv series.

His cartoons for children (ages 7-12) and picture books for younger readers (ages 4-6), including The Great House Hunt, which was a well reviewed bestseller in France, have made him a widely sought after illustrator. Boutavant’s lively, expressive and inventive illustrations are attractive to children in their seeming simplicity and to parents in the complexity they distil. He has worked for a number of French children’s publishers, including Sarbacane, Editions Mila and Bayard.

This Fall, Marc Boutavant will be touring in the U.S. for his new book Ghosts (Enchanted Lion Books) and the forthcoming Ariol: Tome 3 (Papercutz).

Children’s workshops: Marc Boutavant is fluent in English and regularly leads great workshops for children, based on his popular characters. He invites kids to draw their own characters, or to imagine and draw the setting around Boutavant's characters.

Children’s literature in France: Boutavant’s characters, including Ariol and Mouk, have become iconic in France and abroad. He is available to discuss and give overviews of trends and innovations in the French picture book and children’s comics market.

Art Technique: Boutavant is happy to give talks to art students about his use of the color masses, printed-color control, and other features while creating his digital art on the graphic tablet. From the basic mechanics to the ways he turns colors and shapes into memorable characters and fanciful worlds, he walks through the process of creating picture books and comics and talks about the difference between the panel and the page.

Have you ever wanted to live in a place where it’s summer year-round and skip those cold, cold winter mornings? Have you ever tried to get out of the really hard stuff in gym class? Have you ever wondered why school starts so darned early? If so, it sounds like you were once a kid, and if you were ever a kid, you’ll love Ariol, the latest graphic novel series from Papercutz, the comics company for adventurers of all ages!

Written by international best-selling author Emmanuel Guibert with art by the critically acclaimed children’s book illustrator Marc Boutavant, Ariol is about all the questions that are big when you’re little, in tidy sitcom-like vignettes that aren’t just funny but surprisingly true. It’s hard to find children’s books that show us the way life as a kid actually is rather than how we all want it to be; Ariol is the straight story about growing up and all its ridiculousness! Oh, and it also stars a little blue donkey.

Davide Cali’s story is a humorous take on the house hunt, made all the more hilarious by Marc Boutavant’s quirky characters and hyper-detailed illustrations that children will pore over again and again.

For Just One Day, by Laura Leuck, illustrated by Marc Boutavant, Chronicle Books, 2009. ISBN: 9780811856102

For just one day, I'd like to be a busy, buzzing bumble...BEE!What child hasn't pretended to be a monkey, a bear, or a bumblebee? After imagining the fun of being a variety of animals from around the world, a sweet ending—and an attached mirror—remind little ones that the very best thing they can be is exactly who they are.

What Happens Next?

A smartly designed lift-the-flap book reveals surprises in the animal kingdom. A hungry chameleon spies a juicy grasshopper. Turn the half-page. His long tongue shoots out to catch it. Going on, Davies presents other unexpected animal behaviors. A beaver swims underwater into its cozy, dry den. A peacock displays his tail and screeches at a female. A bee dances to tell others in her hive about a patch of flowers. Chimps catch termites with a stick. The final spread in this sequencing exercise offers a matching game to remind young viewers of the actions described. Boutavant's bright digital art spreads across the pages, the flaps matching and smoothly revealing each different scene. There is much for pre-readers to look at and enjoy in his busy natural world. Also in the Flip the Flap & Find Out series, Who Lives There? introduces animal biomes by hiding the answer to the titular question under one of four tabs. A jungle, a freshwater pond, a grassland, a coral reef and the Arctic offer distinctly varied habitats for the 20 different species introduced. The final spread asks youngsters to group the species. While these paper flaps last, they’re sure to get plenty of flipping. Entertainment and education in a pleasing package. (Informational picture book. 3-7)

ARIOL: Just a Donkey Like You and Me

Scenes from the life of a middle-grade Everydonkey. Aside from a few tears after being suddenly struck by the expressions “dumbass” and “dumb as a donkey” (his mother gently joshes him out of his funk), Ariol travels a relatively gentle emotional landscape in this series opener. Giggle-inducing episodes usually involve Ariol’s friend Ramono the pig, who sets off a nose-to-nose, no-hands game of “pass the tissue” at school and later brings fake vomit on a class outing (“My dad had bought it to play a joke on my mom, before their divorce”). Other experiences range from providing commentary for a triumphant tennis match against illusory opponent Stevie McFailure to cutting up in gym and, in the finale, suffering a nightmare in which he has to choose between class crush Petula the cow or becoming an interstellar knight with beloved equine superhero Thunder Horse. Boutavant arranges the all-animal cast in large sequential panels that never look crowded even when the dialogue balloons multiply. Definitely on the Wimpy Kid bandwagon, but less vicious with the satire and therefore all the more welcome.
