VIS-A-VIS: FRENCH BANDE DESSINÉE MEETS L.A. COMICS
Located in the heart of Hollywood, Meltdown Comics is the biggest comics bookstore on the West Coast and the mecca of the Los Angeles comics scene. Much more than a bookstore, it is a meeting place for every fan of pop culture, especially since the creation of the « Nerdist Showroom ». This is where VIS-A-VIS hosted an afternoon of public panel talks that brought together ten French and American authors, artists and specialists in front of a captivated audience. A "pop-up" bookstore was also set up in the showroom for the afternoon by independent bookseller Stuart NG, the largest importer of French bande dessinée in the United States.
The first panel brought together a group of authors, artists and translators (Trevor Alixopulos, Dan Panosian, Fabien Vehlmann, Edward Gauvin) around the theme of Graphic Novels today in France and in the United States. Moderated by comics specialist Jim Higgins, the authors compared practices of creation and reading practices in France and the US, discussed translation and adaptation as well as French-American exchanges today.
The second talk featured Arthur De Pins, Jul, Abel Lanzac and John Pham and was moderated by Charles Solomon, famous critic, historian and animation lecturer at UCLA. It revolved around the themes of Graphic Novels on Screen, and the various adaptation practices and media (Film, TV, new digital media...)
Each talk was followed by questions from the audience, and by more personal encounters and signing sessions between the artists and their readers...

"A literary collaboration that has encouraged and organized many salient programs over the years, Vis-a-Vis brings French and American authors together on both continents to discover and discuss what separates and binds together our arts and letters communities. Now the 2014 edition brings these storied stories together for a proper love affair between authors and artists of the comics and illustrated-novel craze exploding in both countries. From TinTin to Persepolis, from Tank Girl toSnowpiercer, not only are the books themselves being translated and collected trans-Atlantic, but also fancy studio productions for cinema and television, especially animated ones, are deepening and furthering the exchange even more. Join the French Consulate and the Nerdist ambassadors for a full afternoon of panels, presentations, demos and new releases covering the history, promise and challenges of this lively cross-cultural exchange"
