Festival America Kicks Off Its 7th Year This Week

September 10, 2014 | By Maggie Love

Over 35,000 people and 40 French publishing houses are expected to converge on Vincennes, France for this year’s Festival America this September 11th through the 14th. The celebration of North American literature will welcome more than 60 well-known and newly established writers to debate and discuss French and American cultural perspectives.

This year’s guest list includes Margaret Atwood and Richard Ford. Renowned authors, from Toni Morrison to Bret Easton Ellis, have attended the festival in previous years. For the first time since its inception in 2002, the festival—which takes place once every two years—will feature French authors.

The theme of Festival America 2014 is Francophone literature in the United States and Canada. A spotlight will also be placed on poetry. Concerts, photography exhibits, films and a Festival Jeunesse for young adult literature will round out the festivities.

Laurence Marie, head of the Book department at the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in New York will participate in a roundtable on the subject of French publications in North America (“Éditer en français au Coeur de l’Amérique du Nord”). Johanna Ingalls, Akashic books editor, will also join two roundtables on the topics of American authors and Amazon, as well as Haitian literature.

Festival America is the only European celebration of North American literary culture. This is its seventh year.
