French Publishers Pay Hommage to Proust

September 30, 2013 | By FRENCH CULTURE BOOKS

November 14, 2013 marks the 100th birthday of Marcel Proust's Du côté de chez Swann, the first volume of A la recherche du temps perdu, published by Grasset in 1913. To celebrate the centennial, French publishers have released a number of remarkable new books on Proust's work and life. In François Bon's essay Proust est une fiction, Proust's personal life and work are blended with fictional episodes involving the author, including an imaginary meeting with Charles Baudelaire. Claude Arnaud's Proust contre Cocteau describes the complicated and relationship between the two authors, and imagines a rivalry between them for the status of grand auteur. Whether autobiographical, scholarly, or utterly inventive, these new works provide exciting new perspectives on one of the 20th century's most enigmatic personalities.
