On June 9, 2016, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development Jean-Marc Ayrault visited the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in New York on the occasion of the Franco-American Children’s Book Publishers Conference, presented by the International Bureau of French Publishing (Bureau International des Editeurs Français). After taking a tour around Albertine, the reading room and bookshop located within the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, and receiving an honorary membership, Minister Ayrault delivered remarks about cultural diplomacy and the importance of literature as a tool for international cooperation. He honored Françoise Mouly, 2012 recipient of the French Legion of Honor, art editor of The New Yorker, and founder of Toon Books, for her achievements as a writer, editor, and publisher. The Minister also recognized Art Spiegelman, the American illustrator and author of Maus, who attended the evening as well.

Ms. Mouly closed the evening with insightful words about the value of art—and specifically graphic novels—as a form of valuing and interpreting a culture.
