Abel Lanzac, a pen-name for Antonin Baudry, started his career a counselor for the French Foreign Affairs Minister, Dominique Villepin.
He took his inspiration from his diplomatic career to create Quai d’Orsay (Dargaud), undertitled "The Diplomatic Chronicles" with Christophe Blain. The two-volume chronicle of French diplomacy takes us behind the scenes of this complex world. The name "Quai d'Orsay" stands indeed for the Foreign Affairs Ministry in Paris, where the action takes place: the immersion of a young man, in charge of writing speeches for the Minister Taillard de Vorms - clearly inspired by Mr. De Villepin - into the tornado of diplomacy.
An immediate success, its second album won the Golden Wildcat (best album) at the 2013 Angoulême International Comics Festival.
The Quai d’Orsay phenomenon then expanded in a film adaptation (The French Minister, 2013) by the director Bertrand Tavernier. Edward Gauvin's translation under the title Weapons of Mass Diplomacy (SelfMadeHero, 2014) allowed the dissemination of the work across the Atlantic.
