Le Moteur de Recherche: A Cultural Translator

March 24, 2014 | By French Culture

Ever wonder what French chanteuse could most accurately be called the 'French Madonna'? Or what French pastry fills the same niche as cupcakes in the US?

With Le Moteur de Recherche, or MDR, you can now answer these questions and many, many more. Discover what French star most closely resembles Kanye West's egomaniacal genius, David Bowie's perennial cool or Robert Downet Jr.'s savoir faire. Enter an American item or name and get the French equivalent. The website, a sort of pop cultural French-English dictionary, is not limited to celebrity equivalents. You can also find the French equivalents for bagels, Chevrolet cars and whiskey.

Produced by the new content laboratory Bigger Than Fiction for Canal +, the site has already handled more than 350,000 searches in less than a week and their expanding and improving the dictionary all the time. The website welcomes both comments and original contributions. You may not agree with all their choices and you may have thought of a matching pair not on the site yet. Think you know what food might qualify as the "French hot dog"? Send them an email and let them know!
