French choreographer Dimitri Chamblas will be directing David Lang’s internationally acclaimed work crowd out at the Walt Disney Concert Hall on Saturday, June 1, 2019. This West Cost premiere of crowd out will serve as Chamblas' LA Phil debut. Inspired by the masses of voices at a soccer match in London, this major vocal work reflects the unison and contrast observed at the game.

crowd out was composed for one thousand voices with the aim of understanding the emotions felt in crowds: excitement, fear, and loneliness. Conducted by Lesley Leighton, this production kicks off the LA Phil’s day-long Noon to Midnight festival and is part of the season-long Fluxus Festival.

During the show, performers will join the audience, gradually turning loud babble into composed music. As Dimitri Chamblas said, "I didn’t adapt the piece to fit the theater. I’m letting the piece transform it. I consider the Disney Hall as a single space, one volume, a public place inhabited by 3,000 humans. For crowd out, we will use the whole space, stage as well as floor-space, audience and performers spread out and mixed together."

Tickets for Pulitzer Prize winner David Lang’s crowd out can be obtained by purchasing tickets for the daylong festival, Noon to Midnight. There is also the option to experience John Adams in concert as part of one of the ticket options.
