French Music at The Hollywood Bowl

Katia and Marielle Labèque

This year’s concert program at the Hollywood Bowl welcomes French artists whose music will be performed in one of the city's most emblematic venues. Among the diverse contributors to the series of concerts this summer celebrating classical, pop, flamenco and many other musical genres, come enjoy the French music featured in this outdoor theater.

Le carnaval des animaux (July 9, Hollywood Bowl)

Carnival of the Animals will kick off the classical season of the LA Phil on July 9 at the Hollywood Bowl. Juanjo Mena plans to perform in a spectacular evening with two kaleidoscopic French works. The imaginative fun of Saint-Saëns’ animals is paired with Berlioz’ drug-fueled fantasy-nightmare. This concert will feature two French pianists, the sisters Katia and Marielle Labèque pictured above.

The Gipsy Kings with Las Cafeteras (August 2 and 3, Hollywood Bowl)

On August 2 & 3 at the Hollywood Bowl, The Gipsy Kings will offer you a glimpse of what Flamenco in the South of France sounds like. Melding flamenco, rumba, salsa, and pop to the tune of 20 million albums sold, the Grammy® Award–winning hit makers, The Gipsy Kings, are coming back with dance-ready sounds, celebrating their 1988 eponymous breakthrough. Their music, as well as that of the Afro-Mexican folk-rockers Las Cafeteras opening for them, will make these two nights of high-energy guitar a concert you won't want to end.

Petrushka (September 3, Hollywood Bowl)

The LA Phil presents Stravinsky’s Petrushka on September 3 at the Hollywood Bowl. The French conductor of the evening – Ludovic Morlot – has crafted a lovely, French program he will share with the Principal Concertmaster Martin Chalifour. Stravinsky, although Russian, composed for Parisian ballet fans. Chalifour is soloist for two lyrical favorites, by Chausson and Massenet, and Morlot leads Stravinsky’s breathtaking and poignant ballet score.

Ravel with Thibaudet (September 10, Hollywood Bowl)

The LA Phil presents the French composer Ravel interpreted by Jean-Yves Thibaudet on September 10 at the Hollywood Bowl. Thibaudet will perform one of the most played and studied compositions of Ravel, his jazzy Piano Concerto, played for the first time in the iconic Pleyel Concert Hall in Paris in 1932. Regarding firsts, Korean conductor Eun Sun Kim – already a regular in Europe’s opera houses – will make her debut at the Bowl, conducting Rachmaninoff’s poignant final masterpiece.
