“The Huguenot Diaspora Across Time and Space” lecture by Dr. Bertrand Van Ruymbeke

The Huguenot dispersion, known in French as le Refuge, is one of the most important diasporas that occurred in early modern Europe. A certain number of these displaced refugees chose to cross the Atlantic and settle in the colonies of South Carolina and New York in the 1680s. This presentation seeks to study the memory of this migration in the United States from the Revolutionary era to 21st century.

Bertrand Van Ruymbeke is professor of American history at the University of Paris 8 (Vincennes Saint-Denis) and senior member of the Institut Universitaire de France. He is the author of From New Babylon to Eden. The Huguenots and their Migration to Colonial South Carolina (2006), L'Amérique avant les Etats-Unis. Une histoire de l'Amérique anglaise 1497-1776 (2013), and Histoire des Etats-Unis. De 1492 à nos jours (2018); and co-editor of Memory and Identity. The Huguenots in France and the Atlantic Diaspora (2003), A Companion to the Huguenots (2016), and The Atlantic World of Anthony Benezet (2016).
