Photography Exhibition | The iconic images of Henri Dauman

Part of France-Atlanta 2019

Photography Exhibition of Henri Dauman

The Breman Museum presents Henri Dauman: Looking Up. Iconic Photography that De ned the 20th Century. This exhibition is on display through December 30, 2019.

Henri Dauman’s photography documents some of the most important events and personalities of the 20th century, from the Kennedys, Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley, to Buddhist priests in Vietnam and the Castro revolution. His images capture the American experience during the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. This Holocaust survivor and self-taught photographer produced iconic images for the covers of TIME magazine, LIFE magazine, and various other publications.

Born in France, Dauman was only 9 when his father was taken by the Nazis to the Auschwitz concentration camp where he died that same year. Dauman and his mother escaped and hid for several years. At 17, his uncle invited him to New York City. “He asked if I wanted to come and live in the United States, and I said, ‘Sure.’ I had been dreaming of New York, seeing it in the movies and photographs. It’s such a photographic city. It’s like a big movie set.”

Dauman’s photographs were recently featured in Paris and at the KP Projects Gallery in Los Angeles.

The Breman Museum, a preeminent cultural center in the Southeast, connects people of all backgrounds in understanding and appreciation of Jewish history, culture and arts. Its Midtown Atlanta location hosts a special, permanent Holocaust exhibition highlighting the resilience of local survivors, plus comprehensive archives on southern Jewish history, the most extensive of its kind.

This event is organized by the William Breman Jewish Heritage Museum (curator, Susanne Katz), Henri Dauman, and the KP Projects Gallery, in collaboration with the Cultural Services of the Embassy of France in the United States.
