Cie Hervé Koubi - Boys Don’t Cry

Saturday, February 29 at 8pm
Sunday, March 1 at 4pm

Led by French-Algerian choreographer Hervé Koubi, Boys Don’t Cry is a full-throttle dance exploration of societal gender norms through the contrasting arenas of sports and dance. In collaboration with author Chantal Thomas and musician Stéphane Fromentin, the work plays on the cliche of the male dancer who prefers dance to violent sports and the tension with a boy’s parents this preference may cause. The familial bonds at the conceptual center of the project are tested and shaped by societal expectations of violence. Only by embracing the transcendent joy of dance does this all-male cast find resolution and absolution from toxic masculinity.

Of Algerian roots, Hervé Koubi grew up in the South of France where he studied both biology and dance at the University of Aix-en-Provence. He is Associate Choreographer at the Pôle National Supérieur de Danse since 2014 and at the Conservatoire de Danse of Brive-la-Gaillarde since 2015.
