EXO EMO | Curated by Antoine Catala and Vera Alemani

From June 29–August 11, 2017, Greene Naftali Gallery will present EXO EMO, an exhibition curated by Antoine Catala and Vera Alemani.

EXO EMO is an exhibition of works that were designed with emotions in mind, either overtly emotional works or works designed in response to an “emotional context” out of which they emerged.

The term "emo" refers to a musical genre which debuted in the '90s. It is associated with melodramatic lyrics filled with teen angst, gloomy heartbreak, and suicidal thoughts. The genre redirected the punkhardcore agenda towards more navel gazing politics. It emerged as grunge, a musical genre which, like emo, was born out of small seedy music venues and was charged with emotion, became mainstream—all the while, Napster started its systemic erosion of the music industry as it existed. A double challenge to self-conscious emo wannabes.

The term "exo" refers to the externalization of emotions or, in other words, the self-aware, ambivalent act of putting out works laced with emotion into the world.

As the internet continues to create a new economy of emotions, EXO EMO gathers works from the late '90s through today that all deal with ambivalent emotions, feelings that straddle sincerity and the prefabricated emotions seen in corporate advertisements, entertainment, products, and services.

Featuring: Art Club 2000, Antoine Catala, Nicolas Ceccaldi, Sue de Beer, Dan Graham and Nicolás Guagnini, Dean Kenning, Allan McCollum, John Miller and Richard Hoeck, Jean-Luc Moulène, Daniel Pflumm, Sean Raspet, Carissa Rodriguez, Carolee Schneemann, Trevor Shimizu, Hayley Silverman, Tim Simonds, and Momoyo Torimitsu

Antoine Catala (b. 1975, France) is known for sculptures that integrate cutting-edge technology, including holograms and pneumatic images in response to technology’s control of our interpretation of images. Spanning from highly sophisticated systems to a simple, DIY vocabulary, Catala’s language is embedded with jarring, humorous surrealism.
