Anne Morgan’s War: American Women Rebuilding France

This exhibition of photographs and rare silent film footage brings to life the extraordinary work undertaken by 350 American women – all volunteers – who left comfortable lives in the United States to devote themselves to humanitarian aid in France.

Out of the devastation of the war came the creation of hundreds of US volunteer organizations such as the American Committee for Devastated France, headed by Anne Morgan, daughter of prominent financier JP Morgan. Over a period of 7 years, under the dynamic leadership of Anne Morgan, over 350 American women volunteers went to Picardy, a region of northern France that had been ravaged during World War I, to rebuild the region and bring aid to the French citizens still living there. Along with her colleague Anne Murray Dike, a trained physician, Anne Morgan led fund-raising efforts while working in the field and established headquarters in the town of Blérancourt. She later bought and restored part of the Château de Blérancourt, which now hosts the Franco-American Museum whose archives were used for this exhibition.

"American Women Rebuilding France: 1917-1924" is part of a series of exhibitions at Atlanta History Center commemorating the Centennial of World War I in 2017-2018.Automatic word wrap
