Nina & Lisa Simone

The Cultural Services of the French Embassy present Nina & Lisa Simone following La Fête de la Musique, two special screenings dedicated to American artist Nina Simone (1933-2003), and her daughter, actress and singer, Lisa Simone.

The evening will start with Lisa Simone Concert at the exceptional venue Cyrnos Palace in Ajaccio, France. With a rich vocal range and a soul-deep understanding of music as a means of healing, empowerment and celebration, Lisa Simone is a multi-talented artist in her own right, whose ability to transcend genres echoes the tradition of her mother. Performance was recorded and directed by French Mareterraniu Productions and France 3 Corse ViaStella in 2016 as part of the program Mezzo Voce, and this screening will be a US Premiere. This intimate 60 minutes concert includes interviews and documentary sequences, encapsulating moments of harmony with the audience.

The film will be followed by Nina Simone – Live at Montreux 1976, featuring her whole legendary concert at Montreux Jazz Festival. In a 71 minutes set, Nina Simone, also known as “the High Priestess of Soul", gives a moving, riveting and powerful performance. This unique recording reveals the icon’s imposing figure, as she shows at once chaos and love. Fusing classical, jazz, blues, folk and gospel, the pianist and civil rights activist left her mark in the 20th century.

Lisa Simone will give a concert in New York on June 28, as part of France Rocks Summerfest 2016. More information

Mareterraniu co-produced documentary The Seventh Fire in collaboration with Natalie Portman. Presented by Terrence Malick and directed by Jack Petitbonne Riccobono, the film captures Native American gang crisis on a Minnesota reservation. The film was screened at the White House in April 2016. More information
