Live Cinema: Vincent Moon & Priscilla Telmon invite Laraaji at The Mission

Rituals will be a unique event where the audience meets the worlds of cinema, travels, Rituals, and music.

The night will start with a premiere of “Ashram”, a contemporaneous portrait of the community at Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda's Sai Anantam Ashram, in Agora Hills, California. Following its foundation in 1983, a multi-ethnic and multi generational spiritual community emerged. The highpoint of living or practicing in this very special and loving environment took shape on Sundays, when Alice would lead the community in a musical ceremony, mixing both gospel and Indian chant, to create a music she wholly invented - it was something extraordinarily powerful.

Ten years after Alice Coltrane’s passing, the Ashram officially closed last month, in September, 2017. Produced by Luaka Bop and Boiler Room, Vincent Moon & Priscilla Telmon created this unique document of a community at a critical point of its existence - with extraordinary cinematography and sincerity. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first and only time, the ashram has been filmed.

Followed by a Q&A by Director Vincent Moon and Priscilla Telmon, the evening culminates with a mix of shots from Alice Coltrane’s documentary to a selection of their film from their label “Petites Planetes” who gathers sacred ceremonies and Rituals from around the world. From a soufi ritual in Harar, afro-brazilian prayers from Umbanda, a budhist ceremony in Elista Temple to a Quechuan mass in the Cuzco Cathedral or to a trance session in Hanoï, Rituals reveals the fraternal links between the healers, the chamans, the mystical conductors. This poetic exploration will be performed live and combines a live edit and musical improvisations from multi-instrumentalist Laraaji who specializes in piano, zither and mbira.

With a visual language combining long shots of intense musical sequences and a reflective point of view of the world, Rituals’ goal is to create an immersion for the audience. They will surround Vincent, Priscilla, and Laraaji in the middle of the room and follow them on a personal journey towards the poetry of humankind and the mystic rhythms of syncretism.

Vincent Moon & Priscilla Telmon are a collaborating artist duo working as independent filmmakers and sound-explorers. Together, they produce ethnographic experimental films and music recordings, that are based on material collected from their numerous travels.
