Rodin and the Contemporary Figurative Tradition

"Eve" by Auguste Rodin, Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, Grand Rapids, Michigan © William J. Hebert

Timed to coincide with the centenary of his passing and international recognition as the greatest sculptor of modernism, this exhibition features seventeen contemporary sculptors whose work is in dialogue with and perhaps even indebted to the great French master. In addition to the display of several works by Rodin, the galleries will highlight seventeen critically acclaimed sculptors from across the United States and Europe.

More than a juxtaposition of past and present, this exhibition highlights the critical nature of Rodin for sculptors. The figurative tradition will be considered along the pioneering veins the French master introduced more than a century ago in terms of representation, fragmentation, portraiture, materiality, and symbolism.
