Uptown Flicks @ Maysles Presents France's Oscar Entry BPM

Image: "BPM (Beats per Minute)", directed by Robin Campillo

Uptown Flicks @ Maysles is pleased to present 2 screenings of France's Oscar contender for best foreign film BPM (Beats per minute).

In Paris in the early 1990s, a group of activists goes to battle for those stricken with HIV/AIDS, taking on sluggish government agencies and major pharmaceutical companies in bold, invasive actions. The organization is ACT UP, and its members, many of them gay and HIV-positive, embrace their mission with a literal life-or-death urgency. Amid rallies, protests, fierce debates and ecstatic dance parties, the newcomer Nathan falls in love with Sean, the group’s radical firebrand, and their passion sparks against the shadow of mortality as the activists fight for a breakthrough.

The film, a full of life and absorbing story of AIDS activism, is a New York Times "Critic's Pick", winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and certain to be short listed and nominated for the 2017 Best foreign film Academy Award.

The 6pm screening will be followed by a Q&A with Michelangelo Signorile, who will then introduce the following 9pm screening.

Michelangelo Signorile is a journalist, commentator and author of several books, including the groundbreaking bestseller Queer in America. He was a member of ACT UP New York in the late '80s, and chaired its Media Committee, publicizing many of ACT UP's protests and demonstrations.

This screening is the third event of the new Harlem film series Uptown Flicks @ Maysles, curated by Adeline Monzier and co-organized by Marie Gentine. The monthly series features screenings of top recent French films and documentaries followed by a drink to mingle and share reactions!
