Making Africa: A Continent of Contemporary Design

CYRUS KABIRU. C-STUNNERS, 2012. AFRICAN SUN.

A collaboration between the Germany’s Vitra Design Museum and Spain’s Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Making Africa, A Continent of Contemporary Design explores the diversity and depth of modern artistic creation across the entire continent. Drawing from a wide variety of disciplines, the exhibit features everything from furniture and haute couture to music and video games. The works demonstrate how contemporary African artists are helping to shape a new era of optimism, rapid growth and massive cultural transformation. Making Africa shows Africa as a hub of experimentation generating new approaches and solutions of worldwide relevance in the 21st-century. The High Museum of Art in Atlanta is the first museum in the United States to host the exposition.

The exhibit showcases over 120 artists and designers, including the work of noted Francophone artists such as French-Ivorian graphic novelist Marguerite Abouet, Senegalese photographer Omar Victor Diop, Senegalse fashion designer Oumou Sy, and the Beninese artist Meschac Gaba.

The exhibition, which opened on October 15, 2017, will remain on display until January 7, 2018. Don’t miss your chance to see this incredible exposition before it leaves town.
