Niki de Saint Phalle was a self-taught female artist who is best known for her works in monumental sculpture, painting, and filmmaking. Perhaps one of her most known works is her serie of sculptures called the Nanas, a collection of whimsical and colorful large-scale sculptures of colorful, round and extravagant female figures. Another one of her famous projects was the Tarot Garden, a large sculpture garden located in Tuscany containing creative pieces some as large as houses. Saint Phalle used mosaic and fiberglass as well as bold colored paints to create her sculptured works. This French artist has been highly acclaimed by critics all around the world for creating art that is moving, exuberant, and bold.

The exhibit at the California Center for the Arts called Mythical California illustrates myths and legends of California through sculptures, photographs and video clips, among others, created by Saint Phalle. The exhibit will also include Saint Phalles’ print series, California Diary, which documents the artist’s personal thoughts during her first year living in California. In addition, the exhibit will celebrate the 15th anniversary of Saint Phalles’ sculptural garden named Queen Califia’s Magical Circle, which was her was her last commissioned work before her death in 2002.
