Conversation on Artists in Exile

Dance performance Displacement by Mithkal Alzghair and Conversation on Artists in Exile at Invisible Dog Art Center, Brooklyn.

After the New York Premiere of Displacement by France-based Syrian choreographer and dancer Mithkal Alzghair at 7:30 PM,  a roundtable discussion about Artists in Exile will follow at 8:30 PM. It brings together Jumana Al-Yasiri, Manager of Sundance Institute’s Theater Program – MENA Region; Alison Russo, Director, Artist Protection Fund (APF) at Institute of International Education (IIE); Anno Moftah, dancer, APF Fellow in residence at NYU Center for Ballet and the Arts, and Mithkal Alzghair.

The panel will be moderated by Omar Berrada, writer, translator and curator.

What does artistic creation mean in contexts of war, political turmoil or revolution? How is creative work affected by fleeing one country for another? How does exile shape personal and artistic identities? Can art transcend national and cultural borders? Can art influence the way we think about migration and belonging? How can international cultural exchange be sustained in the context of the travel ban?
