Uptown Flicks @ Maysles Presents Plot 35

Image: "Plot 35" directed by Eric Caravaca

Uptown Flicks @ Maysles is pleased to present a screening of Eric Caravaca's very personal documentary about a family secret, Plot 35 (Carré 35) on Thursday, February 1st at the Maysles Cinema in Harlem.

"Plot 35 is a place that was never mentioned in my family; it is where my elder sister, who died aged three, is buried. The sister about whom I was told nothing, or nearly nothing, and of whom my parents had oddly never kept a single photograph. It was to make up for the missing images that I decided to make this film. Thinking that I would simply chronicle a forgotten life, in fact I opened up the hidden door to a past that I was unaware of, to the subconscious memory that lies inside each of us and who makes us what we are." - Eric Caravaca.

The film, selected at the Cannes Film Festival 2017, depicts the intime journey of the French actor-turned-director Eric Caravaca who tries to unearth personal family history in search of his sister Charlotte, who died as a toddler before he was born.

The feature documentary will be preceded by the short film What tears us apart (Ce qui nous éloigne) by Hu Wei with Isabelle Huppert.

This screening is the 7th event of the new Harlem film series Uptown Flicks @ Maysles curated by Adeline Monzier and co-organized by Marie Gentine. The monthly series features screenings of top recent French films and documentaries followed by a drink to mingle and share reactions!

The presented films all have one thing in common: they are questioning the current state of the world, sometimes with a radical perspective, sometimes with a hopeful look at humanity at its best, and end up opening our eyes about the role images and narratives play in bringing these issues to our awareness.
