The School for Wives

The City Garage presents "The School for Wives", opening February 23d in Santa Monica. Written in 1663 and often considered one of Molière's best plays, "The School for Wives" still adresses issues of our time: ostensibly, it’s a comedy, but as in all Moliere’s plays, it’s a biting social satire, one that, as speaks in surprising and illuminating ways to the issues of patriarchy, gender, and power that are in the “Time’s Up” headlines of today.

In Molière’s classic comedy Arnolphe, a rich merchant, is under the delusion that he can create a perfect marriage for himself by creating the perfect wife. He raises a young orphan. Agnes, from infancy, determined to keep her ignorant of everything except what he teaches her himself. His plans, however, are quickly undone by the handsome young Horace who, despite everything Arnolphe tries, takes Agnes’s education into his own hands—especially when it comes to love.

By Molière, translated by Frédérique Michel and Charles Duncombe.

“The central character in Molière’s comedy, newly translated by Frederique Michel and Charles Duncombe, could be and often is a punching bag. But not here…. The play emerges less as a clown show and more as a wistful, almost elegiac rumination on aging and folly.”
