Raymond Depardon in Person!

Celebrate International Francophonie Day on March 20th with a pair of French-language films!

The American Cinematheque at the Aero Theatre is hosting legendary filmmaker-photographer Raymond Depardon in person with a double feature of his documentaries 12 Days (12 jours) and France (Les Habitants). These films offer compassionate looks at psychiatric commitment procedures (12 Days) and a cross-section of contemporary French people (France). Discussion between films with director Raymond Depardon.

12 Days Depardon's new documentary – where justice and psychiatry meet. Every year in France, 92,000 people are placed under psychiatric care without their consent. By law, the hospital has 12 days to bring each patient before a judge. Based on medical records and a doctor’s recommendations, a crucial decision has to be made – will the patient stay or leave? 12 DAYS after which lives can change forever. Granted access to these hearings for the first time, celebrated filmmaker/photographer Raymond Depardon captures these extraordinary encounters between justice and psychiatry. Astonishing, enlightening – a film that gives a voice to those who have previously been voiceless.

France is a previous work by Depardon. Following his Journal de France, the legendary filmmaker-photographer delivers a unique picture of France today. Shot as he canvassed homes, businesses and municipal buildings across the country, this tender, moving and powerful film brings the French people into Depardon’s mobile studio, where they speak their minds on a variety of topics.
