River Run Film Festival

The 20th Annual River Run International Film Festival will take place in Winston-Salem, NC April 19-29. This year’s program includes 3 recent French-language releases and one classic film:

Custody (2017):

A broken marriage leads to a bitter custody battle with an embattled son at the center of this tense family drama. Winner of the Silver Lion award at the Venice Film Festival, Xavier Legrand’s gripping debut feature will keep audiences guessing and leave them with their hearts in their throats.

Godard, Mon Amour (2017)

Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist, OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies) returns with this tribute to the French New Wave, specifically the transitional period in the career of Jean-Luc Godard surrounding 1967 release of La Chinoise. During his relationship with the film’s lead actress Anne Wiazemsky, his politics and approach to cinema would forever change.

The Workshop (2017)

Antoine attends a summer writing workshop to collaborate with other students on a crime thriller with the help of Olivia, a famous novelist. The process will recall the town of La Ciotat’s industrial past, a history that Antoine feels indifferent to. After a disagreement, Olivia becomes both alarmed and captivated by Antoine’s rage.

The Rules of the Game (1939):

Considered one of the greatest films ever made, French master Jean Renoir’s 20th film is a scathing critique of corrupt French society cloaked in a comedy of manners, in which a weekend at a country château lays bare some ugly truths about a group of haut bourgeois acquaintances.
