Plato Meets Play-Doh

For the opening of the newly reinstalled Getty Villa, the exhibition Plato in L.A.: Contemporary Artists' Visions, curated by the French philologist Donatien Grau, will be on display from April 18 to September 3. This show will feature some of today's celebrated artists, such as Jeff Koons, Paul McCarthy, Rachel Harrison, Raymond Pettibon, and Huang Yong Ping, and present the different ways they engaged with Plato's works.

From Donatien Grau's point of view, Plato's « spirit is ever present in Los Angeles ». Plato in L.A. is highlighting how contemporary artists keep going back to the father of Philosophy and Occidental thinking to explore the border between reality and illusion.

In addition to the exhibition, Donatien Grau has edited a book containing interviews, writings, and illustrations by the contributing artists discussing Plato's legacy. The French guest curator and the Villa Getty are offering us an exclusive take on one the most influential mind of human history, giving us the chance to appreciate how his ideas, if not universal, continue to inspire original creations all over the world.
