Contemplating Character: Portrait Drawings & Oil Sketches from Jacques Louis David to Lucian Freud

Contemplating Character attempts to broadly answer the question—what exactly constitutes a portrait? The exhibit features over 150 works from two and a half centuries of portraiture and includes works by French artists such as Jacques Louis David, Clotilde Martin-Pregnard, François Guiguet and Alfred Dehodencq. It envisions each portrait as a collaboration between artist and subject (who are sometimes one and the same). The character and expressions featured in the exhibit range from dignity to wit and satire, profound sadness, and even the macabre.

The exhibition is organized by Landau Traveling Exhibitions, Los Angeles, California, in association with Denenberg Fine Arts, West Hollywood, California.
