Alfred Manessier

Alfred Manessier ~ Printemps Nordique (Nordic Spring), oil on canvas,1954

Manessier’s non-figurative work favors spiritual and natural themes. He employed a wide variety of mediums, including painting, printmaking, tapestries, and stained glass. Born in Northern France, he was inspired by France’s northern countryside, including landscapes such as the Bay of the Somme, the English Channel, and Flandres.

The current exhibition at the Betchler features landscape-inspired paintings as well as Manessier’s illustrations for St. John of the Cross’ Spiritual Canticles, Eugène Guillevic’s Cymbalum, and the elephantine portfolio Presentation of the Beauce at Notre-Dame of Chartres.
