"The Beauty of Our Voice" by Barthélémy Toguo at the Parrish Art Museum

The Parrish Art Museum will present the first solo museum exhibition in the United States of French-Cameroonian artist Barthélémy Toguo. The internationally renowned artist addresses issues of migration, mobility, colonialism, race, and the relationship between the global north in his multi-disciplinary works spanning painting, performance, installation, and photography.

For the exhibition at the Parrish, on view at the Museum from August 5–October 14, 2018, Toguo will create a comprehensive body of work that expands his gaze to America. Selected pieces include new watercolor paintings, photography from the series Stupid African President, postcards from his international Head Above Water project that involved Hamptons residents, and new versions of his installations Mobile Cafeteria and Road to Exile, adapted to the Parrish. Granted the 2018 Inga Maren Otto Fellowship, Toguo will create the works during a residency at The Watermill Center from June 15-29, and exhibit them at the Parrish thanks to a unique new collaboration between the museum and the Watermill.

This partnership reflects the Parrish’s Platform mission to present process-based projects by a single artist who considers the entire Museum as a potential site for works that transcend disciplinary boundaries, encouraging new ways to experience art, architecture, and the landscape.
