Ionesco's La Leçon is coming to Redwood City!

“Le Théâtre du Coin” will be performing an original staging of the esteemed playwright Eugène Ionesco’s “La Leçon” (translated to “The Lesson” in English), a dark comedic one-act play. “La Leçon,” one of Ionesco’s plays that has reached the most popularity, is a story about how a teacher tortures a pupil to death.

Ionesco wrote his play in 1950 in the style of the “theater of the absurd,” which focuses heavily around existentialism and how the loss of meaning and one’s purpose in life can break down communication. A Romanian-born French playwright, Ionesco was a founder of this style of theatrical writing, which emphasized the absurdity of social relationships and of life in general. Premiering back in 1951 at the Théâtre de Poche Montparnasse, this play is now a classic that is studied in literary courses, and has been interpreted onstage consistently since the late 1950s.

“Le Théâtre du Coin” is a french-language theatrical company that has delighted audiences in the past with productions such as “Venice under the Snow,” “Santa Clause is a Waste,” “The Reverend,” and “Boeing Boeing.”

“La Leçon” will be performed, in French, the 6th, 7th, 8th December 7:00 pm, the 9th December 2:00 pm at the Dragon Theater in Redwood City. Get your tickets quickly, as spaces are limited! To do so, go to: https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/3634641
