Opera Carolina Presents Carmen

Bizet’s opera, adapted from Prosper Mérimée’s nineteenth-century novella of the same title, introduces us to Carmen, a beautiful and free-spirited gypsy and the ultimate femme fatale. When the naive Don Jose falls for her, he falls hard into a dangerous obsession, breaking up with his childhood sweetheart and abandoning the military. But the reckless Carmen cannot be tamed, and she grows weary of Don Jose once she meets the glamorous toreador, Escamillo. This messy love triangle won’t end well.

The Opera Carolina production is directed by Jeffrey Buchman and conducted by James Meena, with choreography by Rosa Mercedes. American soprano Alyson Cambridge transforms herself into the beguiling Carmen, while Italian tenor Dario di Vietri takes on the role of the hapless Don José.
