On February 2, 2019, CAP UCLA in association with Ford Theatres presents French dancer and choreographer Jérôme Bel’s west coast premiere of Gala at the Ace Hotel in Los Angeles!

Bel’s performance, characterized by his signature choreographic style of non-dance, offers an inclusive performance. Using the most “commonplace” of theatrical experiences, the gala, the performance goes from one theater to the next, emphasizing “Fail again. Fail better” from start to end.

Featuring mentally-challenged actors, this piece reflects each performer’s own personality and experiences. Through the power of dance, watch each performer reveal the way in which their cultural repertoire involves them in a singular relationship with the desire for something else other than dance — joy, accomplishment, transcendence perhaps?

Gala is a collective art form that challenges the viewer not to pass judgment, but to appreciate the beauty in diversity. Its accessibility to amature dancers creates a living gallery which we watch, like “a mirror taking a stroll by the side of a road.”

Choreographer Jérôme Bel’s Gala brings together dance professionals and amateurs of diverse backgrounds. Bel explores how including bodies traditionally excluded from the stage can expand the perimeter of performance, challenging the audience to see the beauty in diversity.
