The Grolier Club presents French Book Arts: Manuscripts, Books, Bindings, Prints, and Documents, 12th–21st Century, a wide-ranging survey of the book arts of France, covering a thousand years of artistic achievements, from Medieval and Renaissance illuminated manuscripts to artists’ books and designer book bindings of the current generation.
The exhibition includes approximately 90 works drawn entirely from The Grolier Club’s own rich and extensive collections. The works on display range in time period from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance and are by authors including Voltaire, Anatole France, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Jacques Brel. The artists include anonymous scribes to the miniaturists Boyvin and the Master of the Claremont Hours; to Abraham Bosse, Felix Bracquemond, and Henri Matisse.
Free Lunchtime Exhibition Tours: December 14 and 19, and February 1, 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm, and January 25, 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm. The Curator will lead free public tours of the exhibition. No reservations necessary.
