City Garage Theatre presents a production of Molière’s classic comedy The Bourgeois Gentleman. With performances on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from now until April 7, 2019, students and seniors with an ID can receive discounts on their tickets. On Sundays, entrance is “pay-what-you-can,” but only at the door.

The Bourgeois Gentleman tells the story of a wealthy, yet foolish, man named Monsieur Jourdain. Jourdain falls in love with a woman named Countess Dorimène. Yet, there is one obstacle in his way: his social ranking. Hoping to make Countess Dorimène notice him, Jourdain aspires to be what he is not—a member of the aristocracy.

Determined to overcome his low birth through an improved education, he incautiously surrounds himself with charlatans and swindlers who happily take his money and feed on his innocence. Ingenious servants, pedantic masters, devious nobles, and earnest young lovers all carry this delightfully satirical story of nouveau riche social climbers. In the end, the play asks you to wonder, is the “nobility” to which Monsieur Jourdain so fervently desires really worth it?

This renowned translation by director Frédérique Michel and Charles Duncombe re-imagines the classic play for contemporary audiences, transporting viewers into a fantasy of song, dance, and upper class nonsense.

During City Garage’s previous rendition of The Bourgeois Gentleman, the performance was widely successful and was selected for A Critic’s Choice in the LA Times, a Pick of the Week in the LA Weekly, and nominated for numerous awards. Don’t miss the return of this silly take on upper class pretensions and nouveau riche aspirations!

“This sleek City Garage take on Molière’s satire of nouveau riche pretensions in nominally avant-garde but mainly an unguarded hoot. Director Frederique Michel and Designer Charles Duncombe slyly tailor our times into their tart adaptation….a gracefully loopy soufflé.”
