GLAS Animation Festival

The GLAS Animation Festival will be returning to Berkeley for its fourth year from March 21 to 24! This four-day extravaganza takes place in a variety of cultural centers across Downtown Berkeley, including some galleries and media centers. GLAS Animation, which was founded in 2014, aims to bring together artists, filmmakers, and enthusiasts to share their visions and critically engage with the science and art of animation. GLAS Animation is a non-profit that also funds a grant for animation artists in the Bay Area. The GLAS Animation seeks to showcase those artists, as it simultaneously highlights intriguing animation from around the world while additionally enhancing an overall understanding of its unique artistic medium for viewers in the United States.

The selection committee narrowed down about 3,400 submissions to 94, and of those there are about 14 that were produced in France. The film festival includes an international competition, showcasing five curated progams made up of contemporary animated short films that exemplify the spirit of the festival in the sense that they are often created by an artist or a small team with a singular vision. The festival will also be hosting special guests, including French artist Luce Grosjean who founded Sève Films in 2014 in Arles. Through a variety of experiences such as workshops, panels, and performances, these guest speakers will be able to share their diverse range of knowledge and expertise while also contributing to the vision of a film festival as an opportunity to enhance the sense of community within the international filmmaking community.

These are the French Films included in the festival: "Beware the Intuition" by Robin Courtel; "Ce Gout en bouche" by Laura Passalacqua; "Egg" by Martina Scarpelli; "Grands Canons" by Alain BIET; "I'm Going out for cigarettes" by Osman Cerfon; "Les lèvres gercées" by Kelsi Phung; "Per Tutta la vita" by Roberto Catani; "La Chute" by Boris Labbe; "The Night of the Plastic Bags" by Gabriel Harel; "Your Eyes, Will I Ever" by Félicien Colmet Daâge; "Raymonde and the vertical landscape" by Sarah Van Den Boom; "Sahara Palace" by Zélie Durand-Khalifat; "Hors Piste" by Leo Brunel, Loris Cavalier, Camille Jalabert, Oscar Malet; "Hedgehog" by Vaibhav Keswani, Jeanne Laureau, Colombine Majou, Morgane Mattard, Kaisa Pirttinen, Jong-ha Yoon; and "Stuffed" by Élise Simoulin, Édouard Heutte, Clotilde Bonnotte, Anna Komaromi, Marisa Di Vora Peixoto, Helena Bastioni.
