MAWOMA Contest

MAWOMA (for Music And Women MAestra), the very first worldwide competition for women orchestra conductors, is coming to Los Angeles on April 28 and 29, 2019. Traveling to every continent, this contest will become a reference point for music and equality.

This is a major event for the classical music world that intends to highlight underrepresented women conductors. Founded by French pianist Clémence Guerrand, this concert will prove that music has no gender.

According to MAWOMA, there are very few female conductors as of 2019. With such low numbers, it is imperative to recognize this disparity and develop a community that welcomes women.

This contest is divided in three stages. For the Los Angeles competition, applicants had from January 26 until March 26, 2019 to submit their registration documents. Then, on March 29, 2019, three candidates will be selected. Finally, on April 29, 2019 at 8:30 pm, there will be a public concert.

Los Angeles will be the second destination for MAWOMA. It started in Vienna (April 10 and 11, 2019) and will soon be visiting Johannesburg (June, 2019), Tokyo (August, 2019), Rio (September, 2019), and Sydney (November, 2019).
