When Festivals Go Online

VRrOOm Social XR Events

The coronavirus epidemic is highly disrupting the calendar of this Spring’s cultural events. Several festivals cancelled or postponed their 2020 editions, including Cannes and Tribeca film festivals. Nevertheless many of them are working on online alternatives to offer streaming services to their audience at home, organize virtual meetings, showcase innovative contents and support the fillm industry. Find out our selection of the best initiatives to cope with this situation.

Cinema

Short films

TriBeca Film Festival

While the 19th edition is postponed, the festival is currently sharing curated shorts from Tribeca Film Festival alumni. Each day, a new short film is available online, for free.

My Darling Quarantine Short Film Festival

My Darling Quarantine is an online free short film festival set up by programmers from the Tallin Black Nights festival, Cannes, Venice, Berlin and Locarno, hosted by Talking Shorts platform. In addition to spreading short films in spite of the current COVID-19 situation, they launched this fundraising festival in order to help the healthcare system stakeholders deal with the current problem.

La fête du court métrage

French festival La fête du court métrage has turned into a festival "from home" for its 2020 edition. From March 25 to March 31, the whole selection of short movies around the world is available online for free. Have a look to the full line-up here (in French).

Documentaries

Cinéma du Réel

The acclaimed documentary festival taking place annually at the Centre Pompidou had to close abruptly. A partnership with Mediapart offers to watch thirteen films of this year's selection, focused on first-time filmmakers (mediapart membership requiered), while 9 films from the French selection are available worldwide on Festival Scope, from March 20 to April 5.

Visions du Réel

The Swiss festival Visions du Réel 2020 will take place online for free from April 17 to May 2. The complete program of audacious and singular works will be announced on March 30.

Also available online: Almost 200 titles from the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam collection can be streamed internationally for free.

Classics

TCM Classic Film Festival

As a part of TCM Classic Film Festival: Special Home Edition, TCM showcases films that have been a part of the TCM Classic Film Festival, both from years past and slated for this year’s event. This special edition begins April 16 continuing until April 19 and will include TCM hosts, special guests and events to follow on-air and online.

Other initiatives to follow :

The 2020 Film Festival Survival Pledge

Seed&Spark spearheads an effort to support the independent film ecosystem in the wake of COVID-19 outbreak. About 80 US regional festivals have signed so far a pledge to change rules and allow online screenings.

Marché du Film at Cannes

Industry only. Cannes festival will not be held on the scheduled dates and might be moved to late June. For film industry professionals who would not be able to attend Cannes, the festival is launching a virtual film market which will run alongside the physical Marché and which will include screenings and video meetings.

Accreditations will be available for online participants for €185.

Series / TV

Series Mania

French TV festival and industry event Series Mania, which was due to take place from March 20-28 in Lille, has been cancelled, as well as Series Mania Forum and Lille Dialogues. However, you can watch online the key content of Series Mania Forum: co-pro pitching sessions, UGC Writers Campus, drama series co-writing residency Israel-France, "Coming Next from..." and more than 60 international series selected by Series Mania. The platform is open from March 25 to April 7 at a cost of €90.

MIPTV Online+, the online platform of the international television market

The online service will also stream the In Development, MIPDoc and MIPFormats project pitches, as well as MIPTV’s market intelligence conference sessions, Fresh TV and the Factual and Kids Content Showcases. MIPTV Online+ will be available for free for all those registered for MIPTV, MIPDoc and MIPFormats.

LA Screenings Independents

A group including organisers of the LA Screenings Independents television market is launching Virtual Screenings 2020, a digital market designed to replace this year’s recently cancelled LA Screenings and perhaps other markets called off because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Video Game

Game Developper Conference

As the annual Game Developers Conference (GDC) scheduled in San Francisco had been canceled, virtual talks and awards were streamed for free on Twitch on March 16-20. All streamed talks are now available for free on GDC Vault and many will be posted on GDC's YouTube channel. In addition, to replace the postponed orignal event, a three-day GDC Summer will be held on August 4-6

London Game Festival

The London Games Festival goes digital, from March 26 to April 6. Consumers will be able to tune in to the livestream of the BAFTA Games Awards, and Now Play This, a celebration of indie game, will be going ahead online April 3-5. The business events for game studios such as the LGF Hub and Games Finance Market will also take place online, via Deal Room Events, an online event management platform.

Virtual Reality

NewImages Festival

The next edition of NewImages XR Festival in Paris has been postponed from June to September 23-27 (TBC). You can watch for free talks and interviews of the last edition featuring the filmaker Colin Trevorow (Jurassic World), the producer Katie Calhoon (Legendary Entertainment), the artist Hsin-Chien Huang, etc.
