Interview with Christine Camdessus, Co-Producer of Five Broken Cameras

Founder of ALGERIA Productions and former CEO of Gaumont Productions, Christine Camdessus has already had a varied, prestigious career as a film executive and producer. Her latest production, 5 Broken Cameras, follows the story of a Palestinian farmer's nonviolent attempts to stop the Israeli army from building a wall separating his village from a nearby Jewish settlement. Directed by Ehad Burnat and Guy Davidi, the film, which has been praised by critics around the world, has recently been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. Frenchculture.org sat down with Camdessus to discuss her involvement in the film.

French Culture : How did you first meet the co directors Guy Davidi and Emad Burnat?

Christine Camdessus : It was my colleague at ALEGRIA PRODUCTIONS Serge Gordey who first met them in Greenhouse in Istanbul (Development workshop) in November 2008. I finally met the two directors when they brought their footage to Paris for editing.

FC : How would you describe the footage? Is it true that much of the footage was filmed before the project began?

CC : The footage was quite impressive. Emad is always at the right place at the right time!! Yes, a lot of the shooting took place before the project was commissioned. However, the last shooting took place in June 2011 while we were still editing.

FC : How did you fund 5 Broken Cameras ?

CC : We (ALEGRIA PRODUCTIONS) are co-producers of the film, we have been supported by France Television (France 5, by CNC (National Center of french Cinema), by the French Producer's Guild (PROCIREP) and by a distribution advance from Cat&Docs.
