Rivette X 2 In Houston

The Museum of Fine Arts in Houston is offering us a belated tribute to French filmmaker Jacques Rivette, who turned 85 earlier this year. The screenings will make us discover a film never released in the U.S.: Le pond du Nord and a new print of his enigmatic epic: Céline et Julie vont en bateau.

Sat, Jul 13 7 p.m.

Sun, Jul 14 5 p.m.

A hallucinatory fever dream, and a spellbinding, through-the-looking-glass thriller as only French New Wave titan Rivette could make, Le Pont du Nord plays like the darker, conspiracy-theory-obsessed cousin of the director’s beloved Céline and Julie Go Boating. This tale of two women follows ex-con Marie (Bulle Ogier), and Baptiste (Bulle’s real-life daughter Pascale) for a surreal odyssey through Paris, replete with mysterious clues, codes, traps, and spies.

Celine and Julie Go Boating

1974, in French with English subtitles

Jacques Rivette

Fri, Jul 19 6 p.m.

Sat, Jul 20 6 p.m.

Sun, Jul 21 4 p.m.

This magical tale recounts the adventures of librarian Julie (Dominique Labourier) and the flamboyant Celine (Juliet Berto), who acts as a kind of White Rabbit leading Julie through the Looking Glass into a world of imagination. With some memory-inducing candy, Celine and Julie plug into a bizarre drama in a mysterious house. They enter disguised as nurses and encounter two women in love with the same man. The widower promised his wife he would not remarry as long as their daughter was alive. As the competition in the triangle reaches a murderous level, the high-spirited heroines plot a daring rescue of the young victim. One of the seminal films of 1970s, Celine and Julie Go Boating is a brilliant meditation on the art of cinema and the nature of fantasy.
