Films On The Green Celebrates Its 10th Anniversary!

On Friday, June 2, 2017, the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, the FACE Foundation, and NYC Parks celebrated the opening night of Films on the Green, their annual French film festival in New York City Parks. At the opening reception, nearly three hundred special guests—including sponsors, VIPs, media representatives—gathered to mark the start of the summer series. A few of the festival’s guest curators, including actress and comedian Wanda Sykes, director James Ivory, and actress Amy Hargreaves, were also present. Guests enjoyed Pommery champagne and delicious canelés by Maman NYC, while DJs from WNYU and WHCS spun tunes amid a buzz of bilingual conversation.

Potiche (Trophy Wife), a François Ozon comedy, was chosen by guest curator Wanda Sykes to open the festival. In Sykes’ opening remarks, she stated, “I’m so excited to be here, thanks to all of you for supporting French cinema, which I adore…I happened to pick this movie tonight, and I think you’re going to love it. I thank you all for being here, et voilà !”

The opening screening drew a crowd of over seven hundred people, many of whom had arrived hours in advance to secure the perfect view of the giant screen. The weather was perfect for a pre-show dinner on the grass, and viewers lounged on picnic blankets and lawn chairs. Fans posted pictures throughout the night: “Summer has begun. Barefoot in Central Park watching French movies at night. @filmsonthegreen” ; “Vive la @filmsonthegreen !!” ; “No it’s not Paris it’s 5th Ave. France, champagne and Wanda Sykes is a winning combo. #filmsonthegreen”
